The Tack Chest

The cover of my latest novel, entitled ‘THE TACK CHEST’ depicts a shire horse beautifully groomed and standing beside a black lacquered chest bearing two trophies. Her name was Dolly Grey and the man holding her was my great uncle Jack.

That much is fact and they inspired me to write this work of fiction - a gentle story of farming from around 1920 to 1960 based locally, in the Hartshill, Mancetter and Atherstone areas.

It begins with the discovery of that chest, many years later, when the family matriarch dies and the discovery of a secret hoard within prompts an odyssey of discovery that shocks everyone.

Oh, did I say gentle? Well, there were the explosives, scandals, crime and classified weaponry along with secret loves and a World War Two guerrilla unit. All startling surprises to a family who thought their father was just, well, - Dad, who grew tomatoes.
